Beta Pi Chapter CompetitionThe Beta Pi Chapter of Phi Sigma Pi at the University of Connecticut put a little twist on a competition and it included a Leadership in Action Module. As a scholarship event, the Chapter held a public speaking competition.

"The reason I hosted this event was because I wanted to allow my Brothers to gain skills in public speaking. For Brothers who have been in the Fraternity longer, they mentioned how nothing like this had been done before as far as they knew, so I figured it would be something different to try. I stressed to them the importance of public speaking, and how they are truly transferable skills and translate into everyday life. Regardless of what career path they choose, public speaking is essential and sets you apart from others who don't have the skill set," said Alex Trice, Scholarship Chair for the Beta Phi Chapter.

However, a week and a half before Members completed the Module The Art Of Effective Communication- Exploring Your Communication Style to learn how they each effectively communicate to other Members.

"We added the Leadership in Action Module in front of it because we thought it would go well together," Trice said. "That way, Brothers can learn even more and had specific activities to do to learn more about themselves. The benefits to having the workshop and Module before the competition allowed for Brothers to recognize not only how they work as individuals, but to learn about the do's and don'ts of public speaking and gain some tips. There was positive feedback from both the competition and the workshop and Brothers said they learned a lot from both."

This is just one great way to apply a Leadership in Action Module directly to something you are working on as a Chapter. Need some more ideas? Email lia@phisigmapi.org
