Teach For America DonorsChoose.org Projects

Some Teach For America Corps Members have very specific projects that they'd like to incorporate into their classrooms. With resources being limited, DonorsChoose.org allows these projects come to life for them and their students.

Below is a listing of the current projects that Corps Members have asked us to help support:

Mr. Cleverdon's The Ideas of Seniors Are Bulletproof: V for Vendetta
In short, V for Vendetta is a graphic novel by Alan Moore, which provides the story of the character "V", a man in a Guy Fawkes mask who is determined to seek vengeance against the multiple violations of basic humans rights by a dictatorial government. I will be focusing on the major theme permeating the novel: a single idea can change the world. As Colton once stated, "Tyrants have not yet discovered any chains that can fetter the mind."

The thematic framework of my British Literature course is "What does it mean to be a human?" With each text, I have them challenge and confront their mindsets, and have them critically analyze the human condition. This book provides the perfect end to my course, and sends them out into the world with the knowledge that their thoughts and ideas can and are valuable, and urge them to think for themselves.

My students need 30 copies of "V for Vendetta" (Graphic Novel). When my 12th graders go out them out into the world, I want them to see that their ideas can be powerful.

From Ms. Sellers:

As a Social Studies department, we are striving toward increasing our students’ critical thinking and writing skills. As educators, we often times hear that the two skills college freshmen are lacking the most are critical thinking and writing. It is our mission to equip and prepare our students with these essential skills through rigorous academic instruction. By doing so, we understand that we help place our students on an advanced-placement trajectory. Furthermore, by strengthening these two critical skills through engaging and rigorous academic tutelage, our students are afforded the opportunity to attend some of the nation’s best public and private high schools. Our department has determined that the most effective way to build and strengthen these skills is through document-based questions or DBQs.

With this in mind, I am asking for your support in equipping our department and students with essential and necessary resources for DBQs. The DBQ Project (www.dbqproject.com) has created and complied resource binders of DBQs. These binders will allow our students continuous practice with high-level critical thinking activities. The Texas History Mini-Qs binder is $275, the American History binder is $325, and the World History binder is also $325. I realize these resources are expensive but they benefit hundreds of students for years to come.

Attached are the order forms for the resource Texas and American/World History binders. Thank you in advance for all of your support. You organization makes it possible for us to provide our students with the best! After all, they deserve it!
