What is Leadership in Action?
Leadership in Action (LiA), in very broad terms, is an interactive certification program designed to empower you with the leadership skills to inspire a positive change in all facets of our fraternity and our communities.
Who can participate in Leadership in Action?
LiA is for YOU if you are:
A Non-Elected Leader in Your Chapter
Attain new, creative ideas on how to best contribute to your Chapter and develop as a Brother.
A Chapter Officer or Committee Chair
Discover the knack to emerge as a dynamic leader in your Chapter and beyond.
An Alumnus in the Workforce and/or Volunteering in Your Community
Refresh the leadership abilities that make you stand out as a Brother in your workplace and in your community.
A Chapter Alumni/Faculty Advisor
Cultivate your capacity to maintain solid team relationships.
A Brother Who Wants to Continue to Develop and Grow
Be inspired to live the Tripod every day by honing skills pertinent to building your life as a responsible citizen and community leader.
In other words, Leadership in Action is for all Brothers!
What can you expect from Leadership in Action?
The program consists of interactive modules at various levels (nationally, regionally, and locally). A module is a flexible course structure which allows for a variety of teaching methods and accommodates a variety of learning styles. Rather than a traditional lecture-style class, modules incorporate discussion, activities, cohort groups, and other interactive learning experiences. Two modules will be unveiled at Convention (“The Great Balancing Act” and “Conflict Resolution”). See a complete list of modules we plan to launch here.
The modules will be organized in specific concentrations following individual goals and characteristics of the fraternity and, in turn, the vision of Phi Sigma Pi:
Shield
Commitment to uphold our ideals
Three Stars
Scholarship
Lamp of Knowledge
Awareness
Staff
Leadership through service
Clasped Links
Fellowship
How can you get involved?
To complete the certification program you will need to attain 75 points, which can come from a variety of areas, with different point values, as listed on the certification page. There are many combinations for you to attain your points. You can follow the examples we've come up with or create your own path.
What can you get out of Leadership in Action?
Not only will you add valuable skills to your own skill-set, you’ll be better equipped to empower your Chapter and better able to handle situations within your Chapter. Additionally, you’ll receive the following:
Leadership Certificate — Upon meeting the 75 credit minimum and application requirements you will receive a signed certificate acknowledging your completion of the program.
LiA Pin — When you complete the program you will also receive a special recognition pin. This pin identifies those members who have been certified through the LiA program. The pin can be worn along with the Phi Sigma Pi Membership Pin especially for national events and when the certified member is facilitating a LiA program.
National Recognition — Upon certification, you will be
Acknowledged in our printed publications
Listed on our website’s certification page
Receiving special recognition during national events
Special Note
Resume Talking Point — We pride ourselves as a Brotherhood in not being a resume builder, but the simple truth is that you should get recognition for your work by being able to list your accomplishments within the Fraternity. Obtaining a certification through our Leadership in Action program may not give you an additional suffix, but it does give you an edge on managing your success and others. Now that’s something to be proud of. Here is our recommendation for how to post this accomplishment on your resume. Under special skills list “Certified in leadership through Phi Sigma Pi’s Leadership in Action program” then list the modules you completed.
When can you get started?
The program itself will be fully launched at the 2010 National Convention in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. National Convention will be your first chance to take advantage of this program and start your journey of leadership exploration. As an added bonus, all of the modules at this year’s National Convention are worth double-credit. Additionally, for every three Brothers registered* and paid for, your Chapter will receive one free partial** registration for an additional Brother to attend Convention. LiA will take place Saturday morning, so bring a Brother through this special offer!
* At least one of the registrants must be a full registration. Full registration is for the entire event (Wednesday through Sunday).
** Partial registration includes events Friday evening through Sunday.
How can you become a Charter Champion of Leadership in Action?
Become a Charter Champion of Leadership in Action by making a donation to the Phi Sigma Pi Foundation. Alumni know best how leadership training can positively impact Brothers not only in their chapter, but in their future careers and community work as well. Review our list of modules and choose a topic that is important to you, an area of growth that you see as vital to the development of our emerging leaders. Donors receive national recognition at events and in publications, and will be on the inside track for updates about the Leadership in Action program. A module costs $3,500 to develop and present. Get on the bandwagon and help us fund a module today! Contact Director of Publications and Alumni Relations Andrew Berman to discuss how you can become a Charter Champion.
